fricking rat bastards!

See Kodak's press release:
> "With Super 8 gates now available for high end scanners, coupled with
> the VISION2 film technology advancements, Super 8 is what 16mm film
> used to be," says Mayson. "Super 8 color negative has become another
> option for professionals with low budgets."
>
> As part of the portfolio revamp, Kodak will discontinue sales of its
> Super 8 Kodachrome film. Final sales of Kodachrome Super 8 will be
> based on product availability over the coming months. Sales of
> Kodachrome 16mm film will continue, unaffected by this announcement.
>
> The decision to discontinue Kodachrome in Super 8 was driven entirely
> by marketplace dynamics.
>
> "Because the 'home movie' market has shifted to digital, sales of
> Kodachrome Super 8 film have declined significantly. In tandem with
> that decline, the availability of processing for Kodachrome Super 8
> cartridges has diminished. In other words, fewer and fewer labs
> worldwide have the machines and the chemistry necessary to process
> this film emulsion in the Super 8 format," according to Mayson.
>
> Kodak will give customers at least a year to process their Kodachrome
> Super 8 film with Kodak or to seek an alternative.
>
> As noted earlier, Kodak remains committed to the Super 8 format, as
> evidenced by the new film announced today, building on a product line
> that covers the needs of enthusiasts, from a choice of stocks in
> negative, Black and White and reversal films. Kodak's intent is to
> maintain the format as long as it is supported by marketplace
> conditions.

Vision2 is negative stock for shooting on film but then converting to digital. As I understand it, you don't get a print back - but a digital file of sorts (along with the neg). It's meant for semi-professionals who want that "film look" but don't want to have to deal with film. It's not intended for amateur filmmakers. I couldn't be less interested in shooting it. But hadn't you heard? Digital is sent from the heavens to unburden us from this cumbersome stuff called film.

        kodachrome petition

        Tue, May 17, 2005 - 6:50 PM

I have just read and signed the online petition:

        "kodachrome 40"

hosted on the web by PetitionOnline.com, the free online petition
        service, at:

        www.PetitionOnline.com/k40/

I personally agree with what this petition says, and I think you might
agree, too. If you can spare a moment, please take a look, and consider
        signing yourself.

Has anyone called Dwayne's Foto in Parsons, KS about this. They are the only US lab that processes Kodachrome! I'll look into it///

No amount of petitionning is going to bring K40 back. The process for developping Kodachrome is incredibly, incredibly complex and tedious. If you want to shoot Kodachrome you'll have to buy from someone who splits and repackages 16mm and processing it will be equally troublesome.

I'm bummed too, but I've talked to cinematographers, labs and Kodak reps and all are singing the same song. I've heard good things about the new Ektachrome100, only trouble being setting exposure in cameras without manual aperture control. :(
